Traffic Watcher Create, Save and Delete Routes
Traffic Watcher is a web application that uses Google data to monitor the transport network. It constantly checks the current travel time to normal and notifies the end-user about when there’s an abnormal delay in the network as-it-happens.
Previously, when users wanted to create new routes into Traffic Watcher, they would have to ask our developers to add them. By implementing the Create, save and delete routes feature, users will have the ability to create routes. I was involved in researching and designing the Create, save and delete routes feature.

Problems we're trying to solve
• Reduce the amount of time it takes for our team to add new routes
• Users weren’t able to add new routes by themselves
• Adding new routes was difficult and unintuitive

Understanding the users
The product manager and I reached out to Traffic Watcher users and gathered requirements for the Create, save and delete routes feature.
The users wanted an easier way to add routes into Traffic Watcher, rather than asking the developer, which would take time depending on how busy they were.
Co-designing and ideation
Using Miro, I set up a co-design and ideation session with the Traffic Watcher team to ideate as many concepts as possible.

Wireframing and prototyping
Using ideas from the co-design sessions, I used Sketch App and Invision applications to design wireframes and the prototype. I presented them back to the Traffic Watcher team.
User feedback
I used the prototype to gather feedback, including users from the Transport Operation Centres, Journey managers and Traffic engineers.
😀
“Yay, that’s good! So good to see it coming soon”
– On knowing the Create, save and delete routes feature is coming soon
😀
“New routes sounds awesome!”
🤔
“What would happen if I wanted to see Invercargill to Queenstown?”
🤔
“The ability to use pins to pick a new route will be really helpful. I don’t know street names outside of the CBD”
Detailed design
Using wireframes and feedback from users, I created detailed designs.

Creating tickets in JIRA
Once I completed the detailed designs, I broke them down into individual features and created tickets, wrote the user stories and requirements in JIRA for backlog refinement.
The Traffic Watcher team discussed, prioritised, and story pointed the individual features in the backlog refinement session.

Supporting developers
During sprint planning, JIRA tickets were added to the sprint, and I supported the Front-end developer and Quality assurance tester whenever they had queries about the designs.
Designing help and support materials
I designed the help guide and the YouTube video for the Create, save and delete routes feature to make the experience better for new users.

User feedback
The Create, save and delete routes feature was well-received, and users were excited to be able to create routes by themselves. We welcomed feedback for future enhancements.
